Original Artwork and Photography by David W. Morrison
I am a painter of pictures, nothing more nor less. When my art works, I touch the ancient traditions of the cave painters, dipping into the collective unconscious called the soul. At other times my paintings are more decorative than substantive, but please don't ask me to match the couch.
I work at multiple mediums: acrylics, watercolors, gouache, traditional and digital photography, digital art, wood and mixed media sculptures. My painting style has been described as southwestern expressionist with an emphasis on color. My subject matter ranges from landscapes of the northern woodlands to the missions of the desert southwest. Bear, moose, deer, and others appear frequently as do Native American cultures past and present.
My artistic philosophy mirrors that expressed in the exhibition catalog of the "Group of Seven" Exhibition of Paintings at the Art Gallery of Toronto in1922. "Artistic expression is a spirit, not a method, a pursuit, not a settled goal, an instinct, not a body of rules."
After working for 25 years as a chef in coastal Maine, Washington DC, and Florida, I've retired to paint, farm, and explore the Northern Woodlands of Maine where it is not uncommon to see moose or bear in the yard and the nearest neighbor is a bit of a hike.
